In 1969, to get radio DJs to play the Archies' hit "Sugar, Sugar," the Man with the Golden Ear Don Kirshner himself instructed his PR team to keep the fact that it was performed by a cartoon band a secret. The next year soul man Wilson Pickett did his own slick rendition, and both The Archies and the soul singer shot the song up the charts. It was the cartoon band who kept the single at No. 1 for 22 weeks, though.
