First Roller Coaster
A former coal-carrying railway in Pennsylvania became the inspiration for America’s first roller coaster. From the Mauch Chunk Railway, LaMarcus Adna Thompson created his version of the roller coaster and opened the Switchback Railway at Coney Island, New York, in June of 1884. The single-track ride ferried passengers down a 50-foot-high, 600-foot-long track at six mph for five cents a ride.
