Before Leonardo DiCaprio became the superstar he is today, he got his start coming up on sitcoms. As a child actor, he went from Romper Room to Roseanne, then quickly got cast in recurring roles on Parenthood and Growing Pains. Now the Oscar winner is looking to get involved in a reboot of a classic sitcom that goes back to just before DiCaprio's young career started out: The Facts of Life.
Together with another sitcom alum Jessica Biel (7th Heaven), DiCaprio is set to executive produce the reboot of one of the 1980s' most popular shows, which so far isn't tied to any network but is being shopped by Sony Television Productions.
Because it's so early in the process, there hasn't even been time yet for speculation on how the show might be updated for today's audiences, but we're hoping they have as much luck in casting as the original series did. Not only were actresses like Lisa Whelchel, Kim Fields and Nancy McKeon an amazing combination as an ensemble cast, but the series also pulled in a totally green outsider in Mindy Cohn, whose comedic performance as Natalie Green lent the show an authenticity that would be difficult to replicate. Cohn was famously discovered by her future den mother Charlotte Rae, who saw Mindy cracking folks up while Rae was doing research on the show at an actual girls school Mindy attended. Everything changed for Cohn that day, and she was involved with the show through its entire run.
We'll keep you posted as this story develops. We know fans of The Facts of Life have already seen writers from the series try and fail to recapture the magic and catch on with audiences through failed spin-offs. Perhaps DiCaprio and Biel will have better luck!
