At Doris Day's boutique hotel, dogs are king and Kirk Douglas is rum

Doris Day had a known soft spot for dogs, and that includes serious activist organizations (like the Doris Day Animal Foundation and Doris Day Animal League), as well as a dog-friendly destination in Carmel, California, The Cypress Inn, where serious fans can luxuriate Doris Day-style, dog in lap.

Although the Cypress Inn has been around since 1929, Day had been a co-owner since the mid-'80s and her influence at the boutique hotel went beyond sharing her love of dogs with guests. Her Hollywood costars also made it onto the menu at the hotel's restaurant, Terry's Lounge. There, you can order a tall drink of Cary Grant (brandy), Kirk Douglas (rum) or Jimmy Cagney (whiskey).

It's likely that extra touch is what makes it feel like a real Doris Day getaway, since her brief trips on The Doris Day Show nearly always involved an encounter with a Hollywood dreamboat.

Early Monday, May 13, the Associated Press reported that the Hollywood legend and animal activist passed away at the age of 97.
