The Spruce Goose Takes Flight

It was its first and last flight. Howard Hughes piloted the 200-ton “Spruce Goose” to lift off. He flew the “flying boat” 70 feet above water for a mile on November 2, 1947. The $23 million dollar beast made of wood and with a wingspan longer than a football field was six times larger than any other plane in existence at the time.
