Short Hair for War Effort Women

It was back to “Grandma-style hairdos” in 1943 for women working for the war effort. Long hair in plants where machinery was operated was an accident waiting to happen. Short hair and upsweeps became the “do” of the day. To encourage working women to adopt the new hairstyle, the War Power Commission enlisted Hollywood’s help and asked actress Veronica Lake to tame her trademark “peekaboo” locks.
