Prohibition Ends After 13 Dry Years
The days of prohibition came to an end on March 22, 1933 when President Roosevelt signed the Beer and Wine Revenue Act. Liquor with less than 3.2% alcohol became legally available for sale. The National Prohibition Act of 1920 fed the Temperance Movement’s belief that banning alcohol would put an end to crime but it instead opened the door to revenue streams for organized crime. The new revenue act would generate federal funds through taxes and create jobs for people and allied industries.
