Origin of the Zip Code

ZIP codes have become so commonplace in today’s world you’d think they were always around. But it wasn’t until sorting mail by hand became too cumbersome that the Zone Improvement Plan, or ZIP for short, came into existence. It helped streamline mail traffic, and on July 1, 1963, cities nationwide all had their own five digit code.
