First Blood Bank

Dr. Bernard Fantus established the first blood preservation laboratory on March 15, 1937. The innovation had an immediate impact on the field of medicine. Fantus was a physician at Cook County Hospital in Chicago. When he realized the need for blood storage and donations, the idea of a blood bank was born. His concept went nationally and later internationally.
