Churchill Resigns

Sir Winston Churchill ended his 60-year political and military career on April 5, 1955. He resigned as Prime Minister and First Lord of the Treasury citing poor health. Churchill had a storied and roller-coaster career. He dominated the United Kingdom during the first part of the 20th century and was the lynchpin of several great moments in history. From his early career in Parliament, where he rose to the First Lord of the Admiralty in 1911, to refusing to surrender to Germany and delivering the acclaimed “Finest Hour” speech. At age 80, Churchill decided it was time to leave office and public life for a quieter existence.
