Stifled by life behind the Iron Curtain, dancer, choreographer and director Mikhail Baryshnikov made a decision that catapulted him onto the world stage. On June 29, 1974, in a secret plan to escape from life within the U.S.S.R., he defected to the West. Already a well-known talent, this move cemented his opportunity to grow as an artist as one of ballet’s most graceful dancers.
