Civil Rights Movement Begins

Montgomery, Alabama, became the birthplace of the Civil Rights Movement in 1955 when Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat to a white person on a segregated bus. Martin Luther King, Jr., emerged as the leader when he organized a non-violent protest movement which led to a 381 day bus boycott that was successful in ending segregated seating on Montgomery’s buses.
