California Attacked: The Shelling of Ellwood Beach

Pearl Harbor wasn’t the only attack the Japanese launched on America. On February 23, 1942, a Japanese submarine targeted the coast of Santa Barbara, California. The sub, called I-17, emerged near Ellwood Oil Field and fired 16 rounds of ammo over a period of 20 minutes. Very little damage was done and the reason for the attack remains a mystery.
