…and none of these facts has anything to do with the calorie count, because you don’t need that kind of negativity in your life. 

Sure, some of us might get that glimmer of hope that winter is over when the snow melts or you leave work in the daylight. Others, however, know winter days are dwindling when they can order a Shamrock shake from McDonalds.

This cup of minty goodness has a cult-like following. Here are some fun facts about the fan favorite.

It dates back to 1970.

However, they were only available in select stores until 2012.

Over 60 million shakes have been sold.

Which is pretty darn impressive seeing as how they’re only available a couple of weeks out of the year.

It hasn’t always been mint-flavored.

We’ve all grown to love the creamy vanilla-mint flavor of the modern Shamrock Shake, but when the drink originally launched — by the dull name of “St. Patrick’s Day Green Shake,” it was made of a mix of vanilla milkshake and lemon-lime sherbet.

It used to have a weird mascot.

Back in the ‘80s, the Shamrock Shake was marketed by a big, green chicken-nugget-looking creature by the name of Uncle O’Grimacey. Luckily, Uncle O’Grimacey has been retired.

There’s the McLeprechaun Shake, too.

You didn’t hear it from us, but… if you order a McLeprechaun shake, you’ll get a Shamrock shake mixed with a chocolate one. Like a liquid Thin Mint!
