R.I.P. Marvyn Roy, the Ed Sullivan Show magician nicknamed ''Mr. Electric''
Marvyn Roy first appeared on television on The Ed Sullivan Show in 1958. He and his wife, Carol, performed five more times on the show through 1969. He was billed as "Mr. Electric" because of his intricate tricks using light bulbs.
His illusions ranged from pulling bulbs out of his hat to swallowing small light bulbs together with a cord and pulling them out of his mouth as a single, connected string of lights.
Roy was born April 1 in Los Angeles (yes, this magician was born on April Fool's Day) in 1925. He became interested in magic at an early age. So much so that the Pacific Coast Association of Magicians named him best magician under 21.
After high school, Roy received the Purple Heart for his service in World War II. He was injured as part of the second wave of American soldiers landing at Normandy in 1944.
Roy enrolled in the theater program at UCLA after the war. He met an ice skater and rope spinner named Carol Williams at the Conrad Hotel in Chicago. They hit it off and were married in 1956. Over the next four decades, Marvyn and Carol opened for Liberace and Dean Martin, appeared on numerous television variety shows, and performed in Paris, New York and Las Vegas.
The couple retired in 1997. Roy published a memoir, Mr. Electric Unplugged, in 2005. After 53 years together, Carol passed away in 2009.
Marvyn Roy died July 1 at the age of 95.
