U.S.S. George Washington: A New Threat From Below

“We must keep ahead of communist efforts, efforts to dominate the world. We must have missiles, missiles of all types, for all purposes.” This was the reasoning behind the construction of the U.S.S. George Washington, a submarine able to launch missiles, even a nuclear warhead, from below the ocean’s surface. On June 9, 1959, this one-of-a-kind sub gave America an upper hand in the arms race against the Russians.
