Pakistan's 1956 Constitution

It had been nine years since Pakistan gained independence and still the country was without a constitution. Finally, the government passed its first constitution on February 29, 1956. Under this initial government, only a Muslim could become head of state and no law that was incompatible with the Quran could be enacted. The new constitution was short-lived. The country’s first president, Iskander Mirza, repealed it in October 1958 and imposed martial law.
